What the 1-day CITB Health and Safety Awareness course costs in 2026, with live prices, what the day includes, and the CSCS green card route.
The CITB Health and Safety Awareness course, usually shortened to HSA, is the entry point to the Site Safety Plus scheme and the course most people take on their way to a CSCS Green Labourer card. Prices vary by format and location, so the table below is generated from our live bookable dates rather than quoting figures that go out of date.

What changes the price
- Online vs classroom. Online sessions often price lower and remove travel costs.
- Location. Classroom prices vary by venue and region.
- How far ahead you book. Popular dates fill first, and the cheapest sessions are usually booked early.
What the day covers
The day typically runs from around 8am to 5pm and works through eight modules:
- Health and safety law and your responsibilities as a worker on site.
- Accident prevention and reporting: what to report, to whom, and why near misses matter.
- Health hazards on site, from dust and vibration to the long-term risks trades actually face.
- Working safely at height, the biggest cause of serious harm in construction.
- Personal protective equipment: what each item does and its limits.
- Manual handling and occupational health.
- Fire safety and emergencies: prevention and what to do when the alarm goes.
- Common site hazards and risk control: plant, excavations, services and housekeeping.
The exam: 25 questions, 80 percent to pass
The day ends with a CITB multiple-choice exam of 25 questions. You need 20 correct answers, a pass mark of 80 percent. It is taken at the end of the course while the material is fresh, and the tutor spends the day covering exactly the ground the questions draw on, which is why first-time pass rates on tutor-led courses are strong.
Certificate and renewal
Your certificate is valid for five years. There are no entry requirements before booking: the course is designed for people with no previous construction training, which is exactly why main contractors accept it as proof of basic site safety awareness. CITB also approves HSA for live online delivery, with the same exam and the same certificate as the classroom version.
HSA and the CSCS green card
For most people the HSA course is step one of the Green Labourer card: the card needs an accepted qualification, which HSA is, plus a pass in the Operatives CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. The course fee above does not include the HS&E test, which is booked separately. Our guide Do you need HSA for a CSCS green card? walks through the whole route step by step.
Who takes the HSA course?
- Operatives and labourers new to construction, or about to work on a UK site for the first time.
- Workers who need the CSCS Green Labourer card to get on site.
- New starters and apprentices at the beginning of a construction career.
- People returning to construction after time in another industry, whose previous tickets have lapsed.
- Trades and support staff whose employer or main contractor requires proof of basic site safety awareness.
Do not pay for a level above what the job needs
HSA is the operative-level course. If you are going on site to work, it is the right level, and paying for SSSTS instead would be spending more for a supervisor course the job does not ask for. The reverse also holds: if you are being given responsibility for other people's work, HSA will not cover a supervisor role, and SSSTS is the correct spend. Our SSSTS vs SMSTS guide covers the levels above.
