SMSTS Online vs Classroom: An Honest Comparison

Online SMSTS is taught live by a tutor over video call and gives the same CITB certificate as classroom. Compare cost, format and what suits you.

The short answer: online and classroom SMSTS courses lead to exactly the same CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for 5 years. The online course is not a self study package. It is taught live by a tutor over video call, covers the same 5 days of content, and ends with the same exam plus trainer assessment. The real differences are cost, travel and how you prefer to learn. Here is an honest comparison.

How online SMSTS works

An online SMSTS course is instructor led. You join a video call at a set time with a live tutor and a group of other delegates, work through the same material as a classroom course, take part in discussions and exercises, and sit the exam at the end. It still takes 5 full days and you are expected to attend every session in full. It is a real course with a register, not a set of recorded videos to watch when you feel like it.

Online courses run in the same schedules as classroom ones: a straight 5 day block, or day release, where the course is spread out at one day a week. Day release is often easier to fit around a live job, because you are only away from site one day at a time.

How classroom SMSTS works

The classroom version runs at a training venue with the tutor in the room. Content, duration, exam and certificate are all the same. What changes is the setting: you travel to the venue each day, and the discussion happens around a table rather than on screen. Some delegates find it easier to stay engaged face to face, and easier to catch the tutor for a quiet question at the break.

If you book a classroom course, pick a venue you can reach reliably for 5 days running. A venue near home or near the job usually beats a slightly cheaper seat an hour up the motorway, once fuel and time are counted.

The certificate is the same

This is the point that matters most. Online instructor led SMSTS carries the same certification as the classroom course. You sit the same exam, the trainer assesses you in the same way, and the Site Safety Plus certificate you receive is valid for 5 years, exactly as it would be from a classroom course. Pick the format that suits you, not the one you assume looks better on paper.

Cost: online is usually cheaper

Online courses are normally the cheapest way to do the full 5 days, because there is no venue overhead built into the price. You also avoid travel, parking and, for venues far from home, hotel costs. On CourseGenie, SMSTS starts from £399 plus VAT, and you can compare online and classroom dates side by side with live prices. For a full pricing breakdown, see our SMSTS course cost guide.

What you need for the online course

If two or three of these are a problem, book a classroom course instead. Fighting your setup for 5 days is a bad way to prepare for an exam.

Common questions

Is the online exam easier? No. It is the same exam plus trainer assessment, and the same standard applies.

Will employers and main contractors accept an online SMSTS certificate? Yes. It is the same certification, so it is accepted in the same way.

What happens if my connection drops? Tell the tutor or the provider straight away. Short interruptions can usually be worked around, but attendance is required in full, so do not book an online course on a connection you already know is weak.

Can I do the refresher online too? Yes. The 2 day SMSTS Refresher also runs as an online instructor led course, and it must be completed before your current certificate expires.

What if I supervise rather than manage? Look at the 2 day SSSTS course instead, which also runs online and in classrooms.
