What you get for the money
SSSTS is the Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme, a 2 day CITB Site Safety Plus course for people who supervise others on site: gangers, foremen, chargehands and trade supervisors. The price of a place covers the full 2 days of training, the exam at the end and the trainer assessment that runs alongside it. Pass, and you hold a certificate that is valid for 5 years. Set against what a supervisor is responsible for day to day, it is one of the cheaper qualifications on site.
What affects the price of an SSSTS course
Four things move the price more than anything else:
- Delivery format. Online instructor led courses, run over video call with a live tutor, are usually the cheapest way to do the 2 days, and the certification is the same as classroom. Classroom courses cost a little more because of venue overheads.
- Location. Venue prices vary by city, so the same course can cost different amounts a few miles apart. Comparing a few venues side by side often pays for the time it takes.
- When you book. Courses with unsold seats close to the start date are sometimes discounted. If your dates are flexible, check for offers before you book.

SSSTS Refresher: cheaper if your certificate is still valid
If you already hold SSSTS and your certificate has not expired, you do not need to pay for the full 2 day course again. The 1 day SSSTS Refresher renews your certificate for another 5 years, at a lower price and with only one day off site. It must be completed before your current certificate expires, so check your expiry date early. Once the certificate lapses, the only option is the full course. One day off site instead of two also keeps the hidden cost down: for most supervisors, lost time on the job is worth more than the course fee itself.
