Overview

Architects and designers rarely drill a wall themselves, but their decisions send others to do it, and in any building constructed or refurbished before 2000 that can mean into asbestos. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 require awareness training for those whose work could expose others to asbestos risk, and CDM 2015 requires designers to eliminate and reduce foreseeable risks at the design stage. This course covers both duties in one place, tailored to design professionals rather than site trades.

Alongside the awareness core, what asbestos is, where it hides and why there is no safe exposure level, the course concentrates on the design decisions that matter: reading a refurbishment and demolition survey and knowing when one is required before intrusive work is specified, designing around known asbestos-containing materials, the questions to put to building owners about their asbestos registers and management plans, and how design and specification choices either protect or endanger the contractors who follow. Delivery is by an IATP-recognised provider.

Site teams take the standard Asbestos Awareness course, and the design-stage duties sit within the wider CDM framework covered on CDM Awareness and in our CDM 2015 guide. Browse related courses under health and safety training.

Asbestos Awareness for Architects and Designers FAQs

Because design decisions send others into asbestos risk: CAR 2012 requires awareness training where work could expose people, and CDM 2015 requires designers to reduce foreseeable risks at the design stage. An architect who cannot read an asbestos survey cannot discharge either duty.
The core awareness content is the same; the application is different. This course spends its time on surveys, specification and design-stage decisions rather than on-the-tools discovery procedures.
Before any intrusive refurbishment or demolition work in a building that could contain asbestos. A management survey is not sufficient for intrusive work, and specifying work without the right survey is where design practices get caught.
Typically half a day, with the accepted industry norm of an annual refresher, which many practices roll into their CPD programme.
