Clear all filters →IOSH Managing Safely is a 3-day course for managers and supervisors in any sector. It is the most widely recognised general management-level health and safety qualification in the UK, awarded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), and it gives line managers the practical knowledge to manage health and safety within their own teams.
The course covers a manager's responsibilities, how to assess and control risk, how to investigate incidents, and how to measure safety performance. It is assessed by a multiple-choice examination and a practical risk assessment project carried out in your own workplace, both of which must be passed to gain the certificate.
It builds on the worker-level IOSH Working Safely course and is a common step before the NEBOSH General Certificate for those moving into a dedicated health and safety role. In construction specifically, managers and supervisors usually also hold the CITB SMSTS or SSSTS courses, and directors take the Director's Role for Health and Safety course; IOSH Managing Safely complements these with a cross-sector management view.
The certificate does not expire, although IOSH recommends a refresher every three years.
The course follows the IOSH Managing Safely modules in a deliberate order. It opens with why managing safely matters and what the law actually expects of a line manager, then spends the heart of the course on the practical core: assessing risks with a simple, usable scoring method, and controlling them by choosing sensible, proportionate precautions. From there it covers the hazards every workplace shares, from slips and manual handling to fire, vehicles and stress, before finishing on what to do when things go wrong, investigating incidents, and how to measure and improve safety performance in your own team. The style is practical throughout: exercises, discussion and real workplace examples rather than legal lectures.
There are two assessments and you must pass both. The multiple-choice examination is taken at the end of the taught course. The practical risk assessment project is carried out in your own workplace afterwards: you apply the course method to real activities in your own area and submit the assessment for marking. That structure is the point of the course: it forces the method out of the classroom and into your actual job, and it is why employers rate the qualification. If you do not pass first time, your provider can arrange a resit of the exam or a resubmission of the project.
Managing Safely runs in three formats: classroom, live online over Zoom or Microsoft Teams with a tutor and fixed dates, and self-paced e-learning. The certificate and assessments are the same in each. Classroom and live online suit managers who want the discussion and a fixed commitment; e-learning suits shift patterns and distributed teams.
