IOSH Working Safely is a 1-day course for workers in any industry, from construction and manufacturing to offices and warehouses. It is one of the most widely recognised entry-level health and safety certificates in the world, awarded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The course covers everyone's personal responsibility for safety, the difference between a hazard and a risk, the common hazards found in any workplace, and how to work without harming yourself, your colleagues or the environment.
It is the entry point to the IOSH range and a natural first step before the 3-day IOSH Managing Safely course for anyone who goes on to supervise or manage others. Unlike the CITB Site Safety Plus courses, IOSH Working Safely is not construction-specific, which makes it a good fit for mixed workforces and businesses that want one consistent safety grounding across every department.
A note on CSCS cards: IOSH Working Safely was once accepted as a route to the CSCS Green Labourer card, but that changed in March 2020 and it is no longer accepted. If you need a Green Labourer card to work on a construction site, take the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course or the Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment course instead, alongside the CITB HS&E test. The certificate does not expire, although IOSH recommends refreshing your knowledge every three years.
The day is built for people who do the work, not manage it, and it assumes no prior training. It opens with why working safely matters to you personally, then makes the distinction the whole course turns on: what a hazard is, what a risk is, and how the two connect to the precautions you are asked to follow. From there it works through the common hazards found in almost any workplace, slips and trips, manual handling, vehicles, electricity, fire, chemicals and noise, and closes with how individuals actually improve safety performance: reporting near misses, challenging shortcuts and looking after the environment as part of the job. The assessment, a short multiple-choice paper and a hazard-spotting exercise, is taken at the end of the day.
Working Safely runs in the classroom, as a live online course over Zoom or Microsoft Teams, and as self-paced e-learning, all leading to the same IOSH certificate. For a single day, most individuals pick whichever date is soonest; employers training a mixed workforce often use e-learning for shift workers and live courses for teams.
