Overview

The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment is the regulated qualification behind the CSCS Green Labourer card. To get the card you need two things: this Level 1 qualification, and a pass in the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives test taken within the last two years. Together they let you apply for the green card that gets labourers onto UK construction sites.

The course covers the health and safety fundamentals every construction worker needs before setting foot on site: the legal duties workers and employers share, risk assessments and method statements and why they bind everyone, manual handling, working at height, PPE, dust and hazardous substances, plant and vehicle movements, welfare and occupational health. It is assessed by a short test at the end, and the qualification does not expire, although the CSCS card itself is renewed every five years.

Our CSCS cards guide explains the green card application step by step, and the CITB HS&E test guide covers booking and preparing for the test, with the test preparation course available if you want structured revision. The CITB Health and Safety Awareness course is the alternative route many sites accept, and it doubles as the Site Safety Plus entry point. Browse related courses under construction training.

Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (Leading to CSCS Green Card) FAQs

Two steps: pass this Level 1 qualification, and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives test within two years of your card application. Then apply to CSCS. Our CSCS cards guide walks through it.
The test is booked separately at a CITB test centre, but we can help you plan both together, and the preparation course covers the revision.
Typically one day, with the assessment at the end. Exact timings are confirmed when you book or enquire.
No. The Level 1 award has no expiry. The CSCS Green card issued on the back of it is valid for five years and then renewed.
They cover similar ground and both support a green card application, but they are different products: the CITB HSA course is part of the Site Safety Plus scheme, while this is an Ofqual-regulated Level 1 qualification. Check which your site or employer prefers; both are widely accepted.
Prices for the Level 1 course vary by location, group size and whether you book a public date or an in-company course.
