Overview

Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent, incurable and entirely preventable, which is why the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 take it so seriously. The regulations set action values that trigger employer duties: at a daily exposure of 80 decibels, hearing protection must be available and training provided; at 85, protection becomes mandatory and hearing protection zones are marked; and an exposure limit of 87 decibels, taking protection into account, must never be exceeded.

This course delivers the training the regulations call for. It explains how noise destroys hearing and why the damage creeps up unnoticed, what decibel figures actually mean and how quickly everyday site and workshop equipment crosses the action values, the employer's duties from assessment to health surveillance, and the worker's side: using hearing protection properly, fitting plugs correctly, and recognising the early signs of damage, including tinnitus, before they become permanent.

Noise Awareness FAQs

From the lower exposure action value: a daily or weekly average exposure of 80 decibels. From 85 decibels, hearing protection becomes mandatory and zones must be marked. An exposure limit of 87 decibels, allowing for protection worn, must not be exceeded.
