Safeguarding adults is the duty to protect people whose care or support needs make them less able to protect themselves from abuse or neglect. The Care Act 2014 put adult safeguarding on a statutory footing, and any organisation whose staff work with adults at risk, in care, health, housing, education, transport or trades that enter people's homes, needs its people trained to notice and act.
The course covers the forms abuse takes, physical, emotional, sexual, financial, discriminatory, organisational, self-neglect and modern slavery, and the signs of each, which are often behavioural before they are visible. It works through the six Care Act principles, from empowerment to accountability, and the discipline of responding well: listening without leading, recording accurately, reporting to the safeguarding lead promptly, and never promising secrecy. Staff leave knowing exactly what to do with a concern, which is the difference between safeguarding policy and safeguarding practice.
