About the CITB SMSTS Refresher Course

The CITB SMSTS Refresher is a 2-day course that renews an existing Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate. It is part of the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme and is taken by site managers who already hold a valid SMSTS certificate and need to keep it current.

The original SMSTS certificate is valid for 5 years. To stay certified you must complete the 2-day refresher before that certificate expires. There is no grace period: if your SMSTS certificate has already lapsed, the refresher is not available and you have to retake the full 5-day SMSTS course instead.

The refresher brings managers up to date with the latest changes in legislation, CITB guidance and industry best practice. It reinforces the core duties covered in the full course: the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, risk assessment, method statements and the management of safe systems of work. Supervisors who manage a team rather than a whole site renew through the 1-day SSSTS Refresher instead.

The renewed certificate is valid for a further 5 years.

CITB SMSTS Refresher Course FAQs

The SMSTS Refresher runs over two days. This is longer than most Site Safety Plus refreshers because of the breadth of the site manager role.
Yes. You must hold a valid, in-date SMSTS certificate. The refresher is only for renewing a current certificate, not for first-time training.
No. There is no grace period. If your SMSTS certificate has already expired you cannot take the refresher and must retake the full 5-day SMSTS course.
The renewed SMSTS certificate is valid for a further 5 years from the date you pass the refresher.
Book in good time before your certificate expires. Leaving it until the last few weeks risks your certificate lapsing, which would mean retaking the full course.
Yes. Many providers deliver the refresher as a live online course. The content, assessment and CITB certificate are the same as the classroom version.
The SMSTS Refresher renews the site manager certificate and runs over two days. The SSSTS Refresher renews the supervisor certificate and runs over one day.
No. SMSTS and its refresher are safety courses, not CSCS cards. A CSCS card is earned and renewed separately through a qualification such as an NVQ plus the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
Prices vary by provider, location and whether you choose a classroom or online place. Compare live dates and prices at the top of this page.
Yes. Like the full course, the SMSTS Refresher includes a CITB assessment that you must pass to renew your certificate.
The refresher reviews changes in legislation, CDM 2015 duties, risk assessment and safe systems of work, with group discussion and an assessment. It assumes you already hold the knowledge from the full course.
Yes. The certificate is awarded by CITB, so you can take the refresher with any CITB-approved provider regardless of who delivered your original course.
Yes, as long as it is a valid, in-date CITB SMSTS certificate. The refresher renews any current CITB SMSTS, not just one from a particular provider.
