Clear all filters →The Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme, usually shortened to SSSTS, is a 2-day course developed by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for first-line supervisors, foremen, gangers and team leaders on UK construction sites. It sits within the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme alongside the SMSTS course for site managers, the Health and Safety Awareness course for operatives, and the Temporary Works qualifications (Temporary Works Coordinator and Temporary Works Supervisor).
SSSTS is recognised across the UK construction industry and is accepted by every main contractor, including Balfour Beatty, Mace, Skanska, Kier and Morgan Sindall, for anyone in a site supervisory role. SSSTS proves the safety knowledge expected of supervisors, but it is not itself a CSCS card route: the CSCS Gold Supervisor card is earned through a Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision NVQ plus the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
The course covers the supervisor's legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015), along with risk assessment, method statements, toolbox talks, and the day-to-day monitoring of safe systems of work. It focuses on the practical decisions a supervisor makes on a live site rather than the wider planning duties covered in SMSTS.
The qualification is valid for 5 years. To stay certified, supervisors complete the 1-day SSSTS Refresher course before the certificate expires.
Supervisors who want a formal, competence based qualification often progress to the Level 4 NVQ in Construction Site Supervision.
SSSTS is two full days, and CITB requires attendance at every session: miss part of the course and you cannot take the assessment. Day one typically establishes where a supervisor stands in law, what the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and CDM 2015 actually require of the person running a team, and then moves into the core tools: reading method statements properly, briefing them to a crew in plain language, and assessing risk dynamically as conditions change through a shift.
Day two is about the daily rhythm of supervision: toolbox talks that change behaviour rather than just collect signatures, walking the site with a purpose, permits to work, responding to near misses and incidents, and the hardest part of the job, challenging unsafe behaviour from experienced trades without losing the team. The course closes with the assessment. It is a practical course pitched at people who run work, not a legal lecture.
Both formats carry exactly the same CITB certificate. Classroom courses put you with a tutor and a group of other supervisors, which suits people who want the discussion and a clean break from site. The online version is a live virtual classroom on Zoom or Microsoft Teams with a real tutor and fixed days, not a self-paced e-learning module. Most venues run the two days consecutively; some split them across a week or offer weekend dates so you do not lose site time. Assessment is a multiple-choice exam plus a short behavioural safety exercise, with the tutor also evaluating your participation across the two days. Around 98% of delegates pass. The course is delivered and assessed in English, and you are expected to join in: group discussion and toolbox talk practice are part of the assessment picture. If you narrowly miss the mark, most venues offer a free or low-cost resit; a significant fail means re-attending the two days.

SSSTS is a CITB Site Safety Plus course, so CITB-registered employers can claim a short course grant when a delegate passes, with amounts set by CITB for each grant scheme year. Contractors putting several supervisors through together can request a group quote via our employer booking service, which handles multi-delegate bookings and purchase orders.
The certificate is valid for five years, renewed with the 1-day SSSTS Refresher before expiry; a lapsed certificate means retaking the full two days. For many supervisors SSSTS is also a staging post: step up to running a site and the next course is the 5-day SMSTS, and supervisors who want a formal competence qualification alongside their training take the Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision NVQ, which with the CITB HS&E test leads to the CSCS Gold Supervisor card.
