About the IOSH Working Safely Course

IOSH Working Safely is a 1-day course for workers in any industry, from construction and manufacturing to offices and warehouses. It is one of the most widely recognised entry-level health and safety certificates in the world, awarded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The course covers everyone's personal responsibility for safety, the difference between a hazard and a risk, the common hazards found in any workplace, and how to work without harming yourself, your colleagues or the environment.

It is the entry point to the IOSH range and a natural first step before the 3-day IOSH Managing Safely course for anyone who goes on to supervise or manage others. Unlike the CITB Site Safety Plus courses, IOSH Working Safely is not construction-specific, which makes it a good fit for mixed workforces and businesses that want one consistent safety grounding across every department.

A note on CSCS cards: IOSH Working Safely was once accepted as a route to the CSCS Green Labourer card, but that changed in March 2020 and it is no longer accepted. If you need a Green Labourer card to work on a construction site, take the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course or the Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment course instead, alongside the CITB HS&E test. The CSCS Cards guide explains the routes.

The certificate does not expire, although IOSH recommends refreshing your knowledge every three years.

IOSH Working Safely Course FAQs

It runs over one day, typically from around 9am to 5pm.
No. The certificate does not have an expiry date. IOSH recommends refreshing your knowledge every three years, as legislation and best practice change.
No, not any more. It was accepted as a route to the CSCS Green Labourer card until March 2020, but it is no longer accepted because it is not construction-specific. For a Green card, take the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course or the Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment course, plus the CITB HS&E test.
It is a general safety course rather than a construction one. To get on most construction sites you also need a CSCS card, and the route to a Green Labourer card is the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course or the Level 1 course, not IOSH Working Safely.
Working Safely is the worker-level course and runs over one day. Managing Safely is the manager and supervisor level and runs over three days, with more depth on risk assessment and responsibilities.
There is a short multiple-choice assessment and a hazard-spotting exercise at the end of the day. Both are straightforward for anyone who has engaged with the course.
