The NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety, usually called the NEBOSH Construction Certificate, is the leading construction-specific health and safety qualification. It applies the same health and safety management principles as the NEBOSH General Certificate but focuses them on the construction industry.
It is made up of two units: a written unit on the management of construction health and safety, assessed by an open-book examination with a short closing interview, and a practical risk assessment carried out on a construction site. Your grade comes from the written unit, and you also need to pass the practical risk assessment.
Alongside the core management content it covers the topics that matter most on site: the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, working at height, excavations, demolition and lifting operations. It is the qualification employers look for in a construction health and safety adviser, and site managers will usually also hold the CITB SMSTS course.
Passing it makes you eligible for Affiliate membership of IOSH and meets the academic requirement for Technical membership (Tech IOSH) with the right experience. Many professionals take the General Certificate first and add the Construction Certificate, or progress to the NEBOSH Diploma or the competence-based Level 6 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety Practice.
The qualification is awarded by NEBOSH and does not expire.
Plan for around two weeks of teaching plus private study, then the assessments. Providers run the taught content as a block, as day release over several weeks, or online. Like all NEBOSH qualifications it is a genuine syllabus rather than an attendance course: the delegates who do well keep up regular private study between sessions and revise properly before the written assessment.
The written unit is an open-book examination taken remotely: a realistic construction scenario to which you apply the management syllabus, followed by a short closing interview that confirms the work is your own. The practical unit is a risk assessment carried out on a real construction site: you inspect, identify hazards across the range of site activities, and produce a risk assessment to a professional standard. Your grade comes from the written unit, the practical is marked as pass or refer, and each unit can be resat separately if needed. You will need access to a construction workplace for the practical, which is rarely a problem for the people the course is aimed at.

The two qualifications answer different questions. SMSTS is the CITB course main contractors require of the person running the site; the NEBOSH Construction Certificate is the qualification employers look for in the person advising on construction health and safety across sites and projects. Ambitious site managers increasingly hold both: SMSTS for the role, NEBOSH for the depth, with the CDM 2015 duties running through each. From here the ladder continues to Tech IOSH membership, the NEBOSH Diploma, or the competence-based Level 6 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety Practice for chartered status.
