The CITB SSSTS Refresher is a 1-day course that renews an existing Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme certificate. It is part of the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme and is taken by supervisors who already hold a valid SSSTS certificate and need to keep it current.
The original SSSTS certificate is valid for 5 years. To stay certified you complete the 1-day refresher before that certificate expires. You can attend the refresher up to the day of expiry, but you must hold a valid, in-date certificate to do so. If your SSSTS certificate has already lapsed, you have to retake the full 2-day SSSTS course instead.
The refresher updates supervisors on changes in legislation, CITB guidance and best practice, and reinforces the core supervisory duties: risk assessment, method statements, toolbox talks and the monitoring of safe systems of work on a live site. Site managers renew through the 2-day SMSTS Refresher instead.
The renewed certificate is valid for a further 5 years.
The refresher is a single, fairly full day built around what has changed since your original course. You review updates to legislation and CITB guidance affecting supervisors, refresh the core duties of monitoring safe systems of work, and bring your day-to-day practice up to date: risk assessment, briefing method statements, toolbox talks, welfare and incident reporting. The day is discussion-led, with a room of working supervisors comparing notes on how their sites handle the same problems, and it closes with a CITB assessment that you must pass to renew. The assessment assumes the experience you have built since the original course, but it is a genuine check, not a formality.
You can attend the refresher up to and including the day your certificate expires, but you must still hold a valid certificate on the day, and cutting it that fine leaves no room for a cancelled course, a resit or a project that will not release you. Once the certificate has lapsed there is no refresher route at all: the only way back is the full 2-day SSSTS course. Most supervisors book around two months before expiry, which keeps the choice of dates and formats open and leaves margin if plans change.
The refresher runs both in the classroom and as a live online course over Zoom or Microsoft Teams, with the same content, assessment and CITB certificate. For a one-day commitment the online format is particularly convenient: no travel, frequent dates, and the certificate is identical. Prices vary by venue, date and format, and the price against each date at the top of this page is the full cost of a place, including the assessment and the renewed CITB certificate at most venues. Because the refresher is a Site Safety Plus course, CITB-registered employers can claim a short course grant when the delegate passes, with amounts set by CITB for each grant scheme year. If your role has grown since your original SSSTS, it is worth pausing before you rebook. The refresher renews a supervisor qualification; it does not cover the site management duties that main contractors expect of the person running a site. If you are now managing a site rather than supervising a team on it, the right move is usually the 5-day SMSTS course rather than another five years of SSSTS.
