About the CITB Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) Refresher Course

The CITB Temporary Works Coordinator Refresher is a 1-day course that renews an existing Temporary Works Coordinator certificate. It is part of the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme and is taken by coordinators who already hold a valid Temporary Works Coordinator certificate and need to keep it current.

The original TWC certificate is valid for 5 years. To stay certified you complete the 1-day refresher before it expires. To attend you must have completed a 2-day Temporary Works Coordinator course, or a previous refresher, within the last 5 years and still hold a valid certificate. If your certificate has lapsed, you retake the full 2-day TWC course instead.

The refresher updates coordinators on any changes to BS 5975, legislation and industry best practice, and reinforces the temporary works management process and the four Cs: communication, coordination, cooperation and competency. Those who support the coordinator on the ground hold the Temporary Works Supervisor certificate.

The renewed certificate is valid for a further 5 years.

What the refresher day covers

The day is built around what has changed since your original course: updates to BS 5975 and related guidance, lessons from recent temporary works failures, and a structured refresh of the management process you run as coordinator, the register, the design brief, design checking and the permits to load and strike. The four Cs, communication, coordination, cooperation and competency, frame the day, and it closes with the CITB assessment you must pass to renew. Attendance at the full day is required.

Timing your renewal

You must attend while your certificate is still valid, having completed the 2-day TWC course or a previous refresher within the last five years. Once the certificate lapses there is no refresher route: the way back is the full two days. Coordinators are appointed by name on live projects, so an expired certificate can be an immediate problem; booking two to three months ahead of expiry keeps the choice of dates open and leaves margin if the project will not release you on the day you planned.

Online or classroom renewal

The refresher runs in the classroom and as a live online course over Zoom or Microsoft Teams, with the same content, assessment and CITB certificate. For a one-day commitment the online option is the easiest to fit around a project, and dates run frequently. Live dates and prices for both formats are at the top of this page.

Cost, inclusions and CITB grant funding

The price against each date at the top of this page is the full cost of a place, including the assessment and the renewed CITB certificate at most venues. The refresher is a Site Safety Plus course, so CITB-registered employers can claim a short course grant when the delegate passes, with amounts set by CITB per grant scheme year. Contractors renewing several coordinators together, common where a temporary works team was trained in the same year, can request a group quote through our employer booking service.

The refresher covers the current edition and any amendments since your original course, which is a large part of why CITB requires renewal rather than a one-off certificate.

It is one day instead of two and assumes the working knowledge you have built as a coordinator, so most delegates find it comfortable. There is still a CITB assessment to pass, and you are expected to contribute through the day.
