The NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations (Carpentry and Joinery) is the qualification that proves you are a skilled, advanced carpenter and joiner, and it is the route to the CSCS Gold Advanced Craft card. It is delivered through the ProQual Wood Occupations qualification. An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is competence-based: instead of sitting exams, you demonstrate that you can already do advanced work, assessed against national standards from your own workplace. It sits at Level 3 on the regulated qualifications framework, and the whole qualification is completed remotely.
It is aimed at experienced carpenter and joiners working at an advanced level who have the skills but not the Level 3 qualification. Where the Level 2 NVQ and the Blue Skilled Worker card prove core competence, Level 3 covers more complex, higher-skilled work, and it is the route to the Gold Advanced Craft card that marks you out as a fully skilled tradesperson. Because the NVQ is assessed on evidence from your day-to-day work, you keep earning throughout, with no classes, no written exams and no site visits.
This NVQ is awarded by ProQual and regulated by Ofqual (qualification number 603/0670/1). It is made up of core units covering health and safety and productive working, plus a pathway you choose to match the carpentry or joinery work you do.
The Wood Occupations Level 3 NVQ has several pathways: Site Carpentry, Architectural Joinery, Shopfitting Site Work, Shopfitting Bench Work and Timber Frame Erection. You complete the units for the pathway that matches your work. You take the pathway that matches your work, and your assessor helps you pick the right one when you start.
Completing the NVQ, together with a pass in the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation, lets you apply for the CSCS Gold Advanced Craft card. The CSCS Cards guide explains how the Gold card, the qualification and the test fit together. If you do not yet hold a Level 2 qualification, the Level 2 Wood Occupations (Carpentry and Joinery) NVQ is the Blue-card route that comes first.
Once qualified at Level 3, experienced carpenter and joiners often move towards supervision with the Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision NVQ or the Level 4 Construction Site Supervision NVQ, which lead to the CSCS Gold Supervisor card. CourseGenie also lists Level 3 NVQs across the other construction trades, including Bricklaying, Roofing and Painting and Decorating. You can also browse the full range of construction NVQs.
