About the CITB SEATS Course

The CITB Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme, usually shortened to SEATS, is a 1-day course that gives site supervisors and managers a working understanding of environmental issues on a construction site. It is part of the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme and sits alongside the safety courses, covering the environmental side of running a site.

The course brings candidates up to date on environmental and sustainability matters, the relevant legislation and industry best practice. It enables supervisors and managers to identify, control and minimise the environmental impact of their work, and to spot opportunities to improve. It is well suited to anyone who already holds SSSTS or SMSTS and wants to add environmental awareness to their site management training.

Topics include the importance of the environment, the basics of environmental management systems, site waste management, the prevention of pollution, water management, the responsible use of energy and resources, and being a good neighbour, including statutory nuisance, communication, and archaeology and heritage.

CourseGenie also lists related environmental training, including COSHH, Spill Kit Training and the Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management, for teams that need to go further on a specific environmental risk.

The certificate is valid for 5 years.

Site teams often combine environmental awareness with wider safety training such as Basic Fire Safety Awareness and the Fire Marshal course. Organisations with broader workforce responsibilities may also look at Prevent Duty and Safeguarding Adults training.

Yes. The course includes a CITB assessment that you must pass to gain your certificate.
SEATS itself is not a legal requirement, but the environmental duties it covers are backed by law. Many main contractors expect site supervisors and managers to hold it.
The certificate is awarded by CITB and is recognised across the UK construction industry.
